Helmut Newton: Paris Berlin / Greg Gorman: Men

31.10.2013 to 18.05.2014
Museum für Fotografie

This successful retrospective was launched at the Grand Palais in Paris last year and now returns to its spiritual home at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. Featuring more than 200 black-and-white and colour photographs from all of Newton’s major series, this comprehensive retrospective not only presents Newton’s iconographic images, but also many photographs that are now going on show in Berlin for the first time.

Curated by June Newton and Jérôme Neutres, this retrospective went on show at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2012. It was the first major showing of the photographer’s work in the French capital since his death, after he had lived and worked there so successfully in the 1960s and 1970s. Featuring more than 200 black-and-white and colour photographs from all of Newton’s major series, the exhibition attracted great publicity in Paris and became a must-see event. The exhibition now returns to its spiritual home at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. Some images on show will already be familiar to viewers from previous Berlin exhibitions, while others are appearing here for the first time. The exhibition includes numerous portraits of famous people, from Pierre Cardin to Margaret Thatcher, fashion pictures for major fashion magazines from the 1960s to the 1990s, as well as several nudes and product photography.

Coinciding with the exhibition, the Helmut Newton Foundation is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Newton set up the Foundation ten years ago and signed a cooperation agreement the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz in the autumn of 2003. After a period of swift refurbishment, the Museum für Fotografie opened in summer 2004, featuring two exhibitions at once, which Newton himself was sadly no longer able to experience: he passed away just a short time before in Los Angeles. Following a personal invitation from June Newton, the famous American portrait photographer Greg Gorman is currently presenting a selection of male nudes, in a show in June’s Room that runs parallel to the Newton exhibition. Gorman’s photographs offer an exciting counterpoint to Newton’s female nudes. For his Berlin showing of 'Men’, Gorman has chosen 25 subjects, shot between 1988 and 2012, mostly in his Los Angeles studio. The young men, sometimes seen in groups, move in front of Gorman’s camera like dancers on an empty stage; the resulting images are timeless, sensual nude portraits.

The Paris exhibition of Newton’s work was accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue which is also now available at the Helmut Newton Foundation.
