The ABOUT THE MUSEUM initiative makes students the focus of the education work of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. A range of offerings are intended for students of every discipline and every level. ABOUT THE MUSEUM provides a framework for cooperation and communication with students, in a programme that we believe is as diverse and multi-faceted as the city of Berlin, the Staatliche Museen and as students themselves.
ABOUT THE MUSEUM is an interdisciplinary initiative which engages in dialogue with the museum’s education programmes. Its aim is to enable a critical, constructive attitude towards the museums and their contents and to give active users greater visibility within the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Through workshops, events and seminars, students and visitors can develop ideas and formats, going on to research and generate experimental, constructive and interactive approaches. Going beyond their own course of studies, the initiative will allow students to independently design and try out new directions in their encounter with art and culture.
Conducted over the winter semester of 2014–15, the project ‘Over short, medium or long’ (supported by the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe) launched the collaboration between students and universities and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The first structures emerged over the course of five semesters, which saw the creation of a dynamic network between students, university teachers and SMB staff. ABOUT THE MUSEUM will extend and consolidate these activities, through the following formats and events:
TEAM DIALOGUE: In an open working group, students spend a semester experimenting with different methods of art education and outreach, while also developing their own approaches to objects and collections.
TEAM MUSEUM SLAM: Participants create connections between the collections and their own subjects of study. Over the course of three workshops, they develop this into a creative piece, later to be presented at the MUSEUM SLAM.
TEAM MENTORING: Trained students guide their colleagues on a visit to one of the museums, then moderate a discussion of the experience.
SEMINARS: In cooperation with Berlin’s higher-education institutions, students engage with the theory and practice of art education. This represents an official element of their programme of study.
TABLE TALK: Students discuss their views on an art-historical or cultural theme with experts, reflecting these in an exhibition.
MEETING: This event, held at the end of the semester, allows the activities and actions of the various groups to be presented to an audience of students.
Participation in all events organised as part of ABOUT THE MUSEUM programme is free for students.
