There are a variety of different activities on offer for children and families. They allow children to digest exhibition content – either with kids their own age or their parents – as well as to try out artistic approaches and forms of expression.
At weekends and during school holidays, we host exhibition talks and workshops. The workshops tie in museum visits with artistic and practical activities. The hour-long exhibition talks are structured as dialogues and are designed to actively include both children and parents in the discussion.
The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s ‘Children’s Academy’ holds weekly sessions where children are invited to discover a variety of museum collections, go ‘behind the scenes’ and meet experts, and get the chance to be creative themselves.
Some institutions have ‘exhibition companions’ for children and families, encouraging them to explore the museums independently. Activity books, cases of learning materials, and the museum magazine give our younger visitors cues to think for themselves as they look at artworks and cultural artefacts.
There is a fee for taking part in these activities. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin offers free entry to children and young people under the age of 18. Parents pay a participation fee (in addition to the usual entrance fee). Participants are required to register for all workshops.
